Priceless, timeless, unmatched – there are many ways to describe classic cars that still retain their original charm and elegance, but only if they have been lovingly maintained. Classic car maintenance is an ongoing project, which isn’t to say the work involved isn’t worth it, but rather that if you own a classic English car, like a 1967 Austin Healey 3000 MK 111 or a 1960 MGA 1600 MK1 Roadster, you need to know how to keep it looking and performing at its best.
In addition to having it regularly serviced and inspected by a qualified mechanic with a genuine love of classic British cars to keep its mechanical and electrical systems in optimal working condition, you also need to pay regular attention to the interior and exterior.
Regular Cleaning and Waxing
Naturally, regular cleaning and waxing are a must, especially if you reside in an area like the Central Coast in which the salt in the air makes all cars prone to corrosion and can damage the exterior. For many classic car owners, cleaning and waxing their pride and joy is quite an enjoyable pastime, so hand washing and waxing is something they can always find time for.
In addition to using the right kind of car wash and wax to make its paint pop – premium quality car care products really are worth the higher price for maintaining classic cars – you should also buy a top chrome polish product to protect the chrome trim and make it gleam.
Storage and Ventilation
Classic cars need to be stored safely out of the elements. That means parked in a carport or garage when they’re not being driven or washed and covered in a soft cotton (or similar material) car cover. This protects the interior from the sun and the salt and grime in the air, as well as the vinyl or leather interior, which is even more prone to damage by the elements.
There are some great products on the market that can assist you with this, including leather and vinyl care products to help block harmful UV rays. Furthermore, you should also ensure your classic car receives ample ventilation, so when it isn’t being driven, be sure to open the doors every few days or keep the windows rolled down slightly to allow the air to circulate.

Hi I’m recently the proud owner of a very nice Xj6 series 1 and have had the paint cut n polish by professionals. I’m now looking for a manual choke conversion kit as my car has got an automatic choke and seems to be inconsistent in performance! I’ve googled them and the supplier in uk is hideously expensive! Just thought you might be able to source cheaper ones over here in Australia? I live in holgate !
